Gather by Candlelight

Every so often, we light candles at the table. Nothing fancy, but something changes when we do. The room feels softer and the kids seem calmer. More than that, we tend to linger longer and it becomes a lesson in sitting, listening, and enjoying each other at dinner rather than rushing through it and moving on to the next thing.

When my kids have friends over for dinner, they usually ask me to light the candles. Maybe it’s so they can swipe their fingers through the flames like I did as a kid or to beg to be the only one who blows them out. Whatever their motive, the outcome is usually the same: more conversation, slower moments, and simply being together.

Here’s how to begin:

  • Stock up on candles.

  • Find holders that you love.

  • Keep them in sight so they are easy to light. Ours sit in the dining room as a gentle reminder to slow down, linger, and connect.

Ideas to make mealtime more intentional:

  • Make a playlist for dinner. I love French and Italian café music.

  • Take turns asking questions or sharing jokes.

  • Ask about the highs and lows of the day and what each person might need help with next week.

And of course, light the candles.

Whether you sit as a family once a week or all seven nights, light the candles and see what happens.

with joy,
